What are skin cells called? Answer-Our skin cells, collectively known as epidermis, protect us from external threats and regulate our body temperature.

These cells have different names and functions, which are as follows:

Keratinocytes:

 These are the most abundant type of skin cells and make up about 95% of the epidermis.

Their primary function is to produce a protein called keratin, which provides structural strength to the skin, hair, and nails.

Melanocytes:

These specialized cells produce a pigment called melanin, which gives skin its colour.

Melanin helps protect the skin from harmful UV radiation by absorbing and dissipating the sun’s energy.

Langerhans Cells:

Langerhans cells are a type of immune cell found in the epidermis.

They play a crucial role in detecting and presenting antigens to the immune system, helping to defend against infections and diseases.

Merkel Cells:

 These are sensory cells found in the epidermis, primarily in the fingertips and lips.

They are responsible for detecting touch and pressure sensations and transmitting them to the brain.

Basal Cells:

Located in the lowest layer of the epidermis, basal cells are responsible for continually dividing and producing new keratinocytes.

This regenerative process helps replace old skin cells as they are shed from the surface.
